Although San Diego County is now closer to moving to the red tier in California's COVID-19 tier system, they were not included in the counties moving out of the purple tier on Tuesday, March 2.
In the red tier, the county would be allowed to reopen indoor operations with modifications.
The county had an adjusted case rate of 10.8 cases per 100,000 people as of Tuesday and a 7.0 case rate was needed to move into the red tier, according to KGTV.
There are also 11.3 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 per day, making the county eligible to resume all outdoor sports.
"San Diego County is headed in the right direction, our cases are dropping and the number of vaccines administered continues to lead our state. We are seeing more school openings and know we are on the path to a lower tier. It is vital we continue to do everything we can to slow the spread and continue our forward progress and momentum," County Board of Supervisors Chair Nathan Fletcher said in a release.
KGTV reports that San Diego County has now vaccinated 538,239 residents with the first dose and 278,470 residents with both doses.
It will be at least three weeks until San Diego County is able to potentially move to the red tier.
Out of California's 58 counties, 40 are now in the purple tier, 16 are in the red, and two are in the orange tier.
