A Brazilian soccer fan is lucky to be alive after falling from the top level of the Estadio Cicero Pompeu de Toledo Stadium in Sao Paulo during a match between Sao Paulo and Gremio. Shocking video captured the fan, identified as 23-year-old Lago de Melo Rios, climbing on top of the railing before losing his balance and falling 40 feet into the crowd of fans below him.
"His girlfriend called me and said she had seen it on the internet," Rios' mother, Lilian Barcelos de Melo, told local media. "She saw that someone had fallen in the stadium. She called him straight away, and someone answered the phone saying that it was him who had fallen from the top tier of the Morumbi, just minutes after it happened. It was a real scare."
Rios landed on a 13-year-old girl and suffered only a broken femur in the terrifying fall. The young girl cushioned Rios as he landed and likely saved his life. Luckily, she did not sustain serious injuries in the accident. Paramedics treated both Rios and the girl at the stadium and took them to separate hospitals.
