Venus Williams Loses To 15-Year-Old Cori Gauff In First Round Of Wimbledon

Cori 'Coco' Gauff has already made a splash at Wimbledon 2019.

The 15-year-old, who is the youngest woman to ever qualify for Wimbledon, pulled off quite the upset on Monday (July 1), beating five-time champion and her idol Venus Williams in the very first round of the tournament.

The 313-ranked teenager, who wasn't even born when Venus won her first grand slam title, beat the 39-year-old star 6-4, 6-4, making her the youngest player ever to win a match at Wimbledon.

"I don't really know how to feel, this is the first time I've cried after a match, after winning," Gauff told the BBC after her historic win. "I never thought this would happen. I'm living my dream right now, not many people get to say that."

Ahead of Monday's match, Gauff told NBC she was excited to play the legendary Venus Williams, saying, "I have nothing to lose, playing against one of the greatest players of all time. I’m just super honored that I get to share the court with her. Not many people get to play Wimbledon at 15 so I’m just happy that I’m one of them."

"Many people have been like 'do you like your draw?' - I love my draw," she continued. "Playing one of the greatest players of all time is a dream - I'm excited to see how I do."

The teen, who boldly stated that she wants to be "the best of all time," also told BBC Sport that Serena Williams is "the reason why I play tennis" and added that she looks at the longevity of both sisters' careers as the ultimate goal.
